Call Us: 386-255-6475 ext 50730

Each year, my students and I together decide on the theme and plan projects for the following year. In June, I announced that this school year our focus will be on our beautiful state of Florida. I will be teaching students about the species of plants, animals, and insects which are indigenous to Florida. In addition to wildlife, we will be learning about some of Florida's important landmarks and historical locations as well. We will be applying what we know within our art projects-which hopefully can make an impact and help bring awareness to students and the community of the importance of protecting our Florida wildlife, and learning about the history as well. With this knowledge, students were involved in the planning process by providing project ideas, and ideas to further our learning this year.
Our goal at large is to create art that can make a difference in the community-by raising environmental awareness.
My goal for this project is to provide a very hands on, engaging activity for students with clay. We will call these "landscape post cards"-although they will not be physically mailed, they will be a similar size.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

First, I would like to say thank you so much for believing in and funding this project. Without the support of Futures, this would not have been possible. The cost of art materials in our current economy has skyrocketted, so being able to have the opportunity to use this type of material has been amazing for students.

So far, we have mostly completed the projects with fifth grade, and half of fourth grade. I am slowly going through the grades, to ensure we have enough for each grade level. By the end of the school year I should be able to have both 3rd and 2nd grades also complete the project.

The impact has been amazing so far. Clay is a highly engaging material for students. They have been able to experiment with color mixing, textures, design, and use tools to create a work of art. This work of art is really important to them, because it shows something that they care deeply about protecting in our state. Our focus was a place, an animal, plant, insect-something that is in need of better support. They had to not only come up with a plan for what they wanted to do, we had to do research on different locations and animals of focus, and they had to communicate in their artist statements their reason behind that choice. This lesson was highly adaptive and engaging, and I hope to be able to do it again in the future.

Students have even gone steps further in my fourth grade classes-and have directly tied the animal they focused on with what they are learning about in their classroom. It was a wonderful tie in.
Attached below are some of the in progress photos, because I have not had a moment to fully photograph the finished pieces. Once finished, I will photograph and email futures additional photos.

Thank you again so much, for your support!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Each year, my students and I together decide on the theme and plan projects for the following year. In June, I announced that this school year our focus will be on our beautiful state of Florida. I will be teaching students about the species of plants, animals, and insects which are indigenous to Florida.

What will be done with my students

This will be a year enriched with 3D art at Champion. This project is planned for my 3rd-5th grade students, but if there are plenty of remaining supplies, I can extend to use with other grade levels as well. Clay is a highly engaging media to use with students, and students from every age appear to really enjoy the creating process with clays.
Each student will be given a 4x6 photo size of cardboard. They will plan out a landscape picture-inspired by Florida, and what they may see. This can be a lighthouse, a beach scene, a forest, or something else that is inspiring and important to that child; so long as it pertains to Florida and the criteria provided for the project.
Once planning is done, the students will present their idea to me-and go over their colors. Once this is done, I will distribute a section of clay for the student to spread across their board, creating thin layered sections to create their scenery. Once the project is complete, the students will be given a photo sleeve protector to put their clay piece in for protection, and will be required to write an artist's statement about their work. This will give students an opportunity to explain their art and to teach their viewers about the importance of their subject.

This project will cover and review standards from the arts, science, social studies, and writing standards.

Below are the standards which will be discussed and applied throughout this project. Multiple standards from multiple grade levels will be included, because this will be a multi level project.

Benefits to my students

The benefits are vast with this project. Cross curricular integration in the arts, fine motor skill building, planning skills and organization are required, community involvement, researching information, writing statements, and group discussions will be important and impactful-so students can create a piece that they feel confident discussing with others-as well as why they created it.
