Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 250

I was able to purchase pool noodles, coffee filters, pipe cleaners, fluorescent spray paint, fluorescent tempera paint, liquid watercolors, spray foam, toothpicks, bamboo skewers, non-slip shelf liners, locally harvested seashells, styrofoam balls, plastic sea creatures, and a chenille rug. The first week students received an interactive lesson about coral reefs around the world and how they are vital to our survival on planet earth. They were able to touch and hold several different types of dry and wet specimens in my personal collection. Fan Coral, brain coral, razor coral, sea urchin, barnacles, sea shells, and an octopus. The next week students created lettuce coral out of coffee filters, liquid watercolor and pipe cleaners. The following week they created a piece of fan coral out of a bamboo skewer, a non-slip shelf liner and fluorescent tempera paint. The next week they created a sea urchin our of a Styrofoam ball and toothpicks. Once all of the elements were created students gathered together all the various elements they created to assemble them together to create their coral reef arrangement. Even my reluctant students were excited about this project. One student rushed to the AP to show her his finished arrangement. This lesson definitely inspired my students to love art and learn more about the oceans and marine life. I could not have done this lesson without your generous donation. Thank you so much!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Each student will create their own version of a coral reef. They will understand how the health of our oceans are vital to our survival. Hopefully the students will develop a deeper appreciation for the health of their oceans and all the wildlife that depends on it.

What will be done with my students

This lesson will progress over a length of 1 grading period. Fourth and Fifth graders receive Art once every 6 days. We will start with a multimedia lesson that will incorporate audio visual instruction as well as direct instructions about the Florida coastline and the coral reefs. Student will be able to see and touch different types of coral, shells, and ocean salvaged items. Students will be challenged to engage their current knowledge of the ocean and hypothesize what could endanger the ocean. The following Art classes will be constructing their own individual coral reef arrangement with various items that resemble the colors and textures of coral reefs. (see image)

Benefits to my students

I will implement this lesson with 4th and 5th graders (approx. 250 students and 12 educators) This lesson will support the Florida Science Curriculum Standards as well as teaching multiple aspects of the Visual Arts Curriculum, Language Arts Curriculum and Math Curriculum.
