My goal is for all agriculture and science students (AgriScience students) to experience aquaponics and for students to research, setup, and maintain the aquaponic systems. These aquaponic systems will be used to teach students the standards of energy flow, carbon cycle, interactions between trophic (feeding) levels within an ecosystem, agricultural practices, and to learn about sustainable food production systems.

Goal

My goal is for all agriculture and science students (AgriScience students) to experience aquaponics and for students to research, setup, and maintain the aquaponic systems. These aquaponic systems will be used to teach students the standards of energy flow, carbon cycle, interactions between trophic (feeding) levels within an ecosystem, agricultural practices, and to learn about sustainable food production systems.

What will be done with my students

Students will:
• Research and explore the history of conventional food production and explain how to improve it. (CTE-AFNR.68.GENRL.07)
• Discover new methods that are being used to combat decreases in food production.
• Research aquaponics, setup, and maintain the aquaponic system. (CTE-AFNR.68.GENRL.11)
• Identify and describe how nutrients are cycled from one living organism to another. (SC.8L.18.3)
• Identify the effects of pesticide runoff, overfertilization, and erosion on an ecosystem. (SC.7.L17.3 and SC.7.E.6.6)
• Measure pH and determine the solution to balance the pH of the water. (SC.8.P.8.8)
• Identify the health of the plants and fish while using the scientific process to fix any problems that may arise. (CTE-AFNR.68.GENRL.11 and CTE-AFNR.68.GENRL.12)

This project will become a permanent fixture to our AgriScience and science curriculums at Deltona middle school. Throughout the year, all teachers will be able to view and discuss the aquaponics to teach and review standards focusing on the ecosystems and agriculture. Since this is a cross-curriculum project, all classes at Deltona Middle School will have access to the aquaponic to complete cross-curriculum activities and learn standards across multiple grade levels while enjoying the everchanging aquaponic from year to year.

Benefits to my students

Expected outcomes for students will be to comprehend the evolution of farming practices, farming techniques, and identify how limited resources affects ecosystems. The benefits for students and teachers who participate and interact with the aquaponics will get hands-on experience on the process and farming benefits from using aquaponics. Because there will be multiple aquaponic systems across the campus, teachers will be able to sign-up for labs and students will be able to visit the aquaponics systems during their lunch.

Budget Narrative

Because we do not have an established aquaponic system available, most of the material requested is for the start up for the aquaponics. We will be using the purchased materials start and maintain all aquaponics systems.
