I would like to purchase littleBits STEAM Student Sets for the Introduction to Technology, Fundamentals of Manufacturing, Exploring Technology and Robotics courses in our Career and Technology Education (CTE) Academy. The primary objective is to provide students with hands-on engineering opportunities with the littleBits sets that encourage design thinking. The littleBits sets will support skills such as working with a group, following step by step directions, reading and learning technology literacy with circuitry. Students use troubleshooting skills, innovation and learn project completion. STEM education relies on integrating technology with people, and these hands-on activities blend the two in a fun and creative way.The sets can be used individually or as a group and appeal to all level of learners.

I would like to purchase littleBits STEAM Student Sets for the Introduction to Technology, Fundamentals of Manufacturing, Exploring Technology and Robotics courses in our Career and Technology Education (CTE) Academy. The primary objective is to provide students with hands-on engineering opportunities with the littleBits sets that encourage design thinking. The littleBits sets will support skills such as working with a group, following step by step directions, reading and learning technology literacy with circuitry. Students use troubleshooting skills, innovation and learn project completion. STEM education relies on integrating technology with people, and these hands-on activities blend the two in a fun and creative way.The sets can be used individually or as a group and appeal to all level of learners.  

 

What will be done with my students

Students will work with the littleBits sets immediately and throughout the school year. The sets will be integrated into the curriculum to provide curriculum enhancement, enrichment and extension activities. They can be used for challenges and competitions. The students may work individually or in groups of 2-3 to follow the instructions and engineer the designs as provided by the kit, and create designs of their own making. Extension of the lessons may be how to improve the design or other applications for the design. The activities appeal to a wide range of learners with a range of skills and can empower students who otherwise struggle in traditional academic areas.

Our Introduction to Technology standards focus on many skills that are enhanced by the littleBits Student STEAM sets, including understanding of the core concepts of technology including input, processes, output, and feedback (CTE 02.01). They address defining systems thinking which involves considering how every part relates to others (CTE 02.02). Students identify how technological systems can be connected to one another (CTE 02.03) and diagnose malfunctions of any part of a system that may affect the function and quality of the system (CTE 02.05).
Our standards extend to design, engineering and troubleshooting such as using design as a creative planning process that leads to useful products and systems (CTE 08.01), identify the design process involving a set of steps, which can be performed in different sequences and repeated as needed (CTE 09.01). Students demonstrate an understanding of the role of troubleshooting, research and development, invention and innovation, and experimentation in problem solving by using troubleshooting as a problem-solving method used to identify the cause of a malfunction in a technological system (CTE 10.01).
Creating the projects with the STEAM kits and solving any problems with the design is an inherent troubleshooting skill and can lead to logical thinking as well as using teamwork to solve problems. These skills apply to all real world careers in Career and Technology Education.

Exploring technology standards that focus on those skills and the standards supported by the littleBits STEAM Student sets include understanding of engineering design by employing brainstorming as a group problem-solving design process in which each person in the group presents his or her ideas in an open forum (CTE 09.02) and model, test, evaluate and modify designs to transform ideas into practical solutions (CTE 09.03).
One of the most important benefits is working as a group and developing leadership skills. All groups have a group leader, and the CTE manufacturing standards (CTE 10.01, 10.02, 10.03) encompass those skills with students to develop leadership and interpersonal problem-solving skills through participation in co-curricular activities to demonstrate effective communication skills, participate in teamwork to accomplish specified organizational goals and demonstrate cooperation and understanding with persons who are ethnically and culturally diverse.

The littleBits STEAM Student Sets are a perfect enhancement to the STEM curriculum at our school and will enrich our learners with valuable and enjoyable hands on engineering, circuitry and technology-based activities.
 

 

Benefits to my students

The expected outcomes are that students will gain a better understanding of circuity, input, output, systems integrations, invention and design by using the kits and the activities associated with them with a connection to our curriculum. The kits will be used by 6 class periods of STEM classes, approximately 150 students, and may be used by our Science and Exceptional Student Education program as well. Students will follow the directions, work as a group, create the designs, test, modify, adapt and explore the world of circuits, motors and sensors. The achievements can be measured through completing project-based goals, through writing reports or making a presentation. Throughout, the individual, group and team building benefits are intrinsic to using the littleBits STEAM Student Sets in the classroom and at our school. 

 

Budget Narrative

I request $1000 grant to purchase 3 littleBits STEAM Students sets at $299.95 each (SKU: 680-0008) and 2 year Bitcare for 15 bits for $99.00. Shipping is calculated at $18.44 for UPS ground, bringing the order total to $1017.29. The amount over the grant will be covered by donations or department or classroom funds. Thank you.
