Goal

Students will discover how scientific instruments are used to forecast weather by using weather instruments. They will then use their knowledge about weather forecasting to design barriers to protect us from natural disasters.

What will be done with my students

We will be using our meteorological experiences (weather instruments/data collection) and the Engineering Design process to incorporate STEM into our curriculum.
Students will:
1. Learn to use the weather instruments and record data on charts and/or tables. Record data in science notebook and classroom weather map.
2. Use our data to forecast the weather.
3. Use the Engineering Design Process to design, build, and test barriers to protect us from hurricanes or other natural events.
4. Compare and communicate designs and results.

Recording daily weather data will be a permanently integrated activity.
Designing, building, and testing barriers will be completed by January 2020.

Anemometers are used to determine how fast wind blows.
Wind vanes measure the direction of the wind.
Barometers measure atmospheric pressure.
Hygrometers measure the moisture content of the air.
Rain Gauges measure precipitation.
Thermometers measure air temperature

5th grade Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:
SC.5.N.2.1
•Recognize and explain that science is grounded in empirical observations that are testable; explanation must always be linked with evidence.

SC.5.E.7.3
Recognize how air temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation determine the weather in a particular place and time.

SC.5.E.7.6
Describe characteristics (temperature and precipitation) of different climate zones as they relate to latitude, elevation, and proximity to bodies of water.

SC.5.E.7.7
Design a family preparedness plan for natural disasters and identify the reasons for having such a plan.
• recognize that Florida’s temperate climate, proximity to the ocean, and geography make it vulnerable to a number of potential natural disaster threats (e.g., hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes, wildfires, flooding).

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit all 5th grade students at Chisholm Elementary.
74 Students
Students will learn that weather is observable and measurable. They will learn how to record daily weather data, make graphs, and find weather trends. Students will then learn about the Engineering Design Process by designing barriers to protect us from natural disasters. Using the weather forecasting tools will engage and reinforce a hands-on learning approach. Furthermore, this project will increase desire to pursue careers in engineering and meteorology.
