Goal

My goal is to expose students to more hands-on science experiments geared to grade 5 standards to improve our school science score from 44% passing to 50% passing the NGSSS state science assessment.

What will be done with my students

Students will receive extensive exposure to standards based lessons supported with hands-on materials that address all domains of science. Teachers will have a variety of hands-on experiments to choose from and these lessons can also be used in our Mad Scientist Club which integrates reading and hands-on science. Because there are 8 experiments in each tub, students can have multiple exposures to each domain.
SC.5.N.1.1-
Define a problem, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigations of various types such as: systematic observations, experiments requiring the identification of variables, collecting and organizing data, interpreting data in charts, tables, and graphics, analyze information, make predictions, and defend conclusions.

SC.5.N.1.3-Recognize and explain the need for repeated experimental trials.

SC.5.N.1.4
Identify a control group and explain its importance in an experiment.

SC.5.N.2.2
Recognize and explain that when scientific investigations are carried out, the evidence produced by those investigations should be replicable by others.

Until I am in possession of the kit, I will not know what the exact specifications of each experiment.

Benefits to my students

My students have very limited exposure to science experience or domain specific vocabulary. These tubs would make sure students had all materials needed to explore the nature of science as well as the other science domains. It will also prepare them for their Grade 5 NGSSS assessment in the spring. There are many tools that students may have not seen before as well as ideas for extension activities.

Budget Narrative

There are 8 tubs with 8 experiences and supplies inside. Each box is worth approximately $62.38 and can be used for many years.
