Our goal for this project is to build a stronger school community by encouraging students and parents to attend a fun and interactive after school evening. Students and parents will have the opportunity to go to different stations exploring, playing and interacting with each other. This will hopefully encourage student voice, self pride and allow the families and students develop deeper relationships.

Goal

What will be done with my students

While in art students will create a specific type of art using paint that reacts to black lights (LAFS.1112.SL.1.2)(MAFS.K12..MP.5). While in music students will learn a song with corresponding sign language and will preform this for an audience at our school (MU.3.0.11). While in PE students will learn new skills so they will be confident enough to teach their families. We will have organized sporting events so families can compete against each other. (PE.4.R.5.1-6.3) The black lights can be used over and over and we hope to have a black out night once or twice a year. We anticipate the black out night to take place after the time change, when it gets darker earlier.

Benefits to my students

The expected outcome is for our students, families and teachers to build a stronger school community. Our special area team also hopes that our students become more confident through this project. When students are allowed to teach others what they know they learn better, retain it longer and become more confident.

Budget Narrative

The black lights will be used in the art room to illuminate the art pieces as well in the music room for the sign language performance. The flashlights will be used by the staff to illuminate students and parents as well as activities around the school. The white gloves will be used so that the audience can see the students hands while they are doing their sign language song. The glow sticks and beach ball will be used outside for organized family activities.
