Goal

The goal for this project is to provide fifth grade students at Chisholm Elementary with hands-on opportunities to investigate and illustrate the flow of electricity by using a variety of models to show open and closed circuits.  

 

What will be done with my students

Students will be engaged in hands-on investigations and illustrations to construct a closed circuit to demonstrate the flow of electricity. By using circuit kit materials, light bulbs, switches and battery packs, students will manipulate real world objects that illustrate electricity flow. The expectation is the activity will provide a meaningful and relevant experience for students that will translate to complex science text and two dimensional models.This particular electricity standard will begin week 20 and 21 of school. Although this standard will be taught once per year, I plan to review the benchmarks prior to state testing and incorporate the materials into Nature of Science lessons to prepare students for the science fair. The expectation is that the materials obtained from this grant will last for years to come in the fifth grade science classroom.

The following standard and benchmarks are taken from the Grade 5 Science Curriculum:

Standard-Investigate and illustrate the fact that the flow of electricity requires a closed circuit (a complete loop).

Students will:
• determine the source of energy for a circuit.
• investigate and illustrate the fact that the flow of electricity requires a closed circuit (a complete loop) when constructing a simple circuit.
• distinguish between open and closed circuits.
• determine which circuit from a visual representation can carry electricity to power an object and which circuit cannot. 

 

Benefits to my students

Upon reviewing data from FCAT Science for the past two years, it was found that Chisholm fifth graders maintained a 66% passing rate (level 3 or above). Although the percentage was eight points higher than the district and fifteen points higher than the state, there is an expectation that Chisholm students' achievement will increase. As a veteran teacher new to teaching fifth grade science, I aim to provide my class and others in my grade level with meaningful and relevant hands-on experiences in the science lab. By investigating and engaging in hands-on learning in the science lab, students will be able to transfer their experiences with the circuits to a science text and two dimensional representation with ease.  

 

Budget Narrative

The Create-A-Circuit Kit, Snap Circuits Mini Kit and Electrical Circuits Kit from Hand2Mind Science will be used together in the fifth grade science lab. These kits provide real world components that students will create by learning the basics of creating circuits. Models to be created include a FM radio, motion detector, doorbell, space battle sound effect and a flying saucer. By using these kids, students gain real-world experience of how electricity works. The light bulbs, light bulb holders and battery holder will be used together to model closed circuits. Students will use the materials to turn on the lights.
