What will be done with my students

Students will meet for 90 minutes twice a week. Upon arrival, they will snack and independently read books of their choice. After this, book sharing and discussion will take place with guidance and modeling from the adults. As students complete a book, they will take Reading Counts tests, plan a creative representation to share the book and their response to it, discuss plan with adult, then carryout the creation of their project.
Some examples of these expressions might be a sculpture of a character, a painting of a scene meaningful to the reader, a song, video, computer game, a coding project. The students will only be limited by their own creativity and the supplies available. Students will share their finished work on Seesaw, an online digital portfolio, which will be accessible by other students, parents, and selected community members.
Additionally, Ms. Diedrichs graciously plans to ask her experienced club members from Citrus Grove to mentor the Jr. Club members at George Marks.

Benefits to my students

The students will benefit from an increase in reading enjoyment, improved reading skills and the chance to creatively express themselves.
Academically, the extra reading time will benefit students with improved fluency. The book discussion time will benefit students with improved comprehension. These two areas will help students improve reading levels and test scores as evidenced by reading measures on iStation tests. Students will become more “future ready” as they creatively express themselves through the various arts and digital platforms available with technology. Students will become familiar with coding which will benefit them by strengthening problem solving skills and sequencing ability, helpful in both reading comprehension and math.
Students will also benefit in social and emotional growth. Sharing will give students voice, build confidence in their presentation skills as well as increase their understanding of the books. Students will also be empowered as they see their sharing inspire others to read more.
Through the shared digital portfolio, club members, parents, school leaders, and community stakeholders can enjoy the students’ work and give positive feedback for growth and encouragement. The benefit of this is that students can learn to accept constructive feedback and make revisions and improvements based on it. Another set of skills that will positively affect their education years and future careers.
Lastly, having the experienced Davinci Club members participate as mentors to the Jr. Club members will benefit both schools by students across schools to see that what they learn can be valuable and have effect on others beyond their world.

Art supplies will consist of, but not limited to, paints, markers, specialty pencils and drawing pens, paper, canvas, adhesives. Students will use these things to creatively express their books.
Ozobots are small robots that students can code to do various things. One example of a project that a student might create is drawing out a scene in their book, creating a character skin for the robot and coding it to “act out” a scene from the book.
The microphone and tripod will allow students to independently record and share their projects to the club’s Seesaw portfolio.
