Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

Thank you to all who have donated to this project! With your generosity, my class library has grown significantly and is more accessible to my students, as I have been able to add a wider variety of lower-level higher-interest books that were not available to them otherwise (they have already burned through the few level-appropriate books in my class library and the media center, due to limited availability of low-level/high-interest books and the fact that they are such avid readers!).

My students have eagerly begun sampling the first set of books brought into the classroom that I was able to purchase at a Scholastic Warehouse sale over the winter break (this sale was able to help me maximize a portion of the grant with highly-discounted books that I was able to select), and we are currently awaiting a shipment of books from an order placed through Scholastic online using the remaining funds, which includes many more books the students expressed interest in that were not available at the warehouse sale (we worked together to create a list of level-appropriate books, both fiction and non-fiction, that they would like to see added to our library, which led to a great lesson on how to search for the items they wanted, access descriptions (synopses) to determine interest, and make decisions based on pricing in order to get the most for the money).

As you can see in the pictures, the students have already completed a "book sampling" where they were able to preview the books and rank them by interest level, to give them a personal guideline for which books they may want to read first, and have made their selections for "first read" to prepare to take their AR tests and meet their goals for the remainder of the year. They can hardly keep their hands off the books, and are constantly asking for time to read! It was difficult for them to even wait for me to label the books with the AR test codes on the first day, they were so eager to begin reading!

Again, THANK YOU, from all of us, for what you have done for my students. :-)

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to expand my current classroom library with high interest/lower reading level books that meet the current reading levels of my students.

What will be done with my students

My students will be able to access my classroom library during designated reading times in class, and will be able to check out books to read at home, in an effort to improve their reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. They will also have the opportunity to take Accelerated Reader tests on these books to assist them with meeting their school-wide AR goals.

Benefits to my students

As my students are struggling readers, their current reading levels make it difficult for them to find high-interest books that meet their needs in the middle school media center, and my current classroom library has difficulty with meeting their needs as well. I believe by stocking the class library with higher interest/lower reading level books that meet their needs, my students will have the opportunity to choose books that appeal to them and are on their appropriate reading level, which would decrease frustration during reading, and increase their reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.

Budget Narrative

I feel that $300 is a great start with stocking the classroom library with books from Scholastic, as it would allow for a wide selection of texts (both fiction and non-fiction).
