The purpose of this project is to provide my students with a practical life skill that empowers them to make a valuable contribution to the world. Aquaponics will provide my students with a hands-on, inquiry based approach to researching, creating and maintaining an aquaponics system. Aquaponics a sustainable method of food production. It is the cultivation of fish and plants together in which the waste produced from the fish supplies nutrients for the plants. The plants in turn, help to purify the water.

Goal

The purpose of this project is to provide my students with a practical life skill that empowers them to make a valuable contribution to the world. Aquaponics will provide my students with a hands-on, inquiry based approach to researching, creating and maintaining an aquaponics system. Aquaponics a sustainable method of food production. It is the cultivation of fish and plants together in which the waste produced from the fish supplies nutrients for the plants. The plants in turn, help to purify the water.

What will be done with my students

This project will provide students with the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge of producing a local, sustainable food source with minimal resources. Students will research the initial set up for the aquaponics system. (what supplies are needed, types of fish and plants that will thrive best) They will use scientific tools to test the water ph levels, nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia levels. Students will learn the scientific method through the process of setting up and maintaining an aquaponics system. They will use science journals to record their weekly data.

Benefits to my students

Students will understand food chains, producers, and consumers. They will be able to conduct scientific investigations. Students will learn the rewards from caring and taking care of their ecosystem. They will take pride in growing their vegetables and caring for the fish. This is a project that can be taught all school year. It will increase student engagement through participation. They will learn that they have the tools necessary to produce a sustainable food source.
