Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 415

Thank you to all who donated to this project! I was able to purchase all of the books that were listed on the grant budget form for a total of 23 new graphic novels! The students have been very excited to see the new titles on display, and with your generous donations you have almost doubled the amount of graphic novels available for checkout. So far this year, 39 students have taken Accelerated Reading (AR) tests on these new graphic novels with an 85% average, which meets the district’s testing standard. The students have also circulated these new graphic novels almost 80 times this year. It is safe to say they are enjoying these new books. I even had one student make the comment: “I was able to see and understand what was really happening in the story with all the cool pictures.”

Thank you again for supporting reading at Union Academy Magnet Middle!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To increase the current collection of graphic novels in order to attract reluctant readers and improve literacy in middle school students.

What will be done with my students

Students will be introduced to the graphic novel genre and given the chance to check these novels out for their reading pleasure. Students will also be able to demonstrate their understanding and comprehension of the graphic novel they have read through testing on the Accelerated Reader program.

Benefits to my students

Motivating reluctant readers is one of the main tasks of any media specialist/librarian. Offering books with strong appeal that are at an appropriate, yet challenging reading level, is an invaluable way to develop lifelong reading habits in middle school students. Graphic novels provide detailed images alongside age-appropriate content, which aids in comprehension and retention of the text. Non-fiction text can be boring and difficult for some students to retain. However, the latest graphic novels are based on non-fiction texts such as, The Korean War, Jackie Robinson, and The Black Death. These vivid books now present once complex material in a more accessible text. Graphic novels will help provide Union Academy students with a well-rounded choice of informational and narrative texts.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes a list of graphic novels that are appropriately leveled for the middle school students. Each book also has a hardcover, special library quality binding, and an Accelerated Reader Quiz for the students to take after reading.
