Goal

What better way to have adventures and learn about far away places than through the world of books? My goal is to combine geography, social studies, and literature during library lessons to teach students about the world they inhabit.

What will be done with my students

Library lessons each month will be dedicated to a specific country: September - Canada, October - Mexico, November - Nigeria, December - Holidays Around the World, January - Australia, February - China, March - Brazil, April - Netherlands, and May - India. The first week will focus on introducing the country with an emphasis on geography and a typical day in the life of a kid, favorite foods, famous people, music, art, language, flag, etc. The second week will focus on a picture book written by an author of that country or about that country. The third week will involve a game, craft, or activity from the country (ex. tangrams for China, making tulips for the Netherlands) tied to the picture book we read the week prior. Students will be given a passport that will be stamped as each new country is traveled to.

Benefits to my students

Over 1,200 students in grades K-5 will learn all about the world around them through interactive lessons in geography, social studies and literature. They will learn how to read maps, calculate how far they are from each country's capital we study, what different languages are spoken (and maybe learn a few words, too), what types of foods are eaten, as well as delve into stories from around the world. With 197 independent nations in the world, my hope is to continue each year with a set of new nations so that by the end of 5th grade students will have learned about 48 countries!
