The goal of applying for this grant is to add more technology options to the art curriculum at Callahan Intermediate School. Technology is a huge part of not only our lives as educators but our students lives as well. While most people don’t naturally see the connection between art and technology at first, once you make the connection it’s easy to see how important bridging these two mediums can help students find a passion for expressing themselves in a positive manner. This grant proposal is center around the technology aspect of stop motion animation. I want to continue to foster their passion for technology, but focus it into an art form to help them express themselves using stop motion animation.
The first thing that will be done is to purchase the Hue Stop Motion cameras. These cameras are essential to help the students learn to capture and edit their stop motion movies. Everyone has seen a stop motion movie, whether that be Wallace and Gromit or Nightmare Before Christmas. Artists and animators work together to make a movie using a camera that takes photos of an object and every time the object moves, another picture is taken. Using special software, the photos are grouped together in a way that animates them to look like they are moving. These cameras, along with the Hue software, allows students to make their own stop motion animation. Using plastilina clay, which is a non-drying clay, and wire armature bases constructed by students, students will make a mini version of themselves. They will create a movie to show who they are or what they love to do. After making their mini clay person, they will outline their movie and film using the camera taking photos of every movement. They will then use the Hue software to pause in the right spots, add sounds, and make their movie as personal and creative as they like. This is a long project, expected to take 6 to 7 classes. This will include introduction to the topic, outlines, armature construction, clay person construction, filming, and then editing. This specific lesson is targeted to 5th grade students.
It will meet many state standards for art: VA.5.F.1- Examine and experiment with traditional or non-traditional uses of media to apply imaginative techniques in two- and/or three-dimensional artworks. VA.5.S.1.1- Use various art tools, media, and techniques to discover how different choices change the effect on the meaning of an artwork. VA.5.S.3.1- Use materials, tools, techniques, and processes to achieve expected results in two- and/or three-dimensional artworks. VA.5.S.3.3- Use tools, media, techniques, and processes in a safe and responsible manner. VA.5.S.3.4- Use ethical standards, including copyright laws, when producing works of art.
This lesson will be taught to 5th graders every year and the final product will be showcased at our art show in spring for the parents and community to see.
There are so many benefits to adding technology to the art curriculum. Technology in art caters to the individual needs of students because it can fit many learning styles. Stop Motion animation specifically, asks students to not only create new avenues of art through innovation, but fosters problem solving, digital literacy, communication, and collaboration. They must constantly ask what is their next move going to be while filming? This lesson asks them to plan ahead but be prepared to pivot and adjust when needed, just like in life. We plan but must be prepared to adjust when things go astray. Students are working hands on to create their person using traditional art mediums like clay and wire bases. They are learning fundamentals of art that they will carry onto middle and high school art classes. Then they are learning a technology that many have never had the opportunity to try before now. This can create a love of STEM for many students. Students must visualize what they want to accomplish and be an active participant in the outcome. One of the best aspects in my option of this lesson is that it has longevity. Students will be able to have a digital copy of this mini movie forever. While art sometimes gets lost, technology allows us to preserve it digital. While the students will be able to take home their clay person after the art show, it might get lost in time. Things happen, but we tend to back up important files, videos, and photos. So, I’m hopeful these stop motion animations will live on for generations to come in their families and that students are so excited to start 5th grade at CIS because they know they will get to make their own stop motion animation movie in art.
The majority of the budget is going to purchase the Hue Stop Motion cameras. The cameras allow our timeline to be faster. The more cameras we have, the quicker filming is and the faster editing is. We have 6 tables in the art room. By having 12 cameras, each table can have 2 cameras dedicated to one table. This will allow 2 people at each table to film, with 2 helpers during one class. The following class the person who was filming becomes the helper, and the helpers gets to film their movie. This allows for opportunities to collaborate with peers. I will use almost $66 for sculpting tools to help the students create their clay person. This will allow each table to have 2 sets of tools per table. These tools will also be used for other clay projects throughout the year as well. The Flexible Assembled Action Figure Stands allow students to pose their figures into fun and interesting movements. For example if a student is showcasing her love for dance, she can use this flexible stand to show her figure twirling around. It can even be used to showcase a a jump shot for basketball. The Plastilina clay is essential for the student figures to be able to move. This non-drying clay allows the students to pose their figures easily without it breaking apart. The silicone mats will be used during the construction of the figures. These mats are nonstick so the clay will not attach to it, keeping the materials together and the table clean for easy clean up. These will also be used in other clay projects throughout the year with multiple grade levels.
