Goal

To expand student’s experience with pitch through exploratory and creative play. Students will use known pitches for singing, composition, and improvisation.

What will be done with my students

Students will use the resonator chime bars to accompany their compositions and explore pentatonic improvisation. Each year Kindergarten students use known pitches of so and mi to bring the book My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss to life with singing and motions, using movement scarves. With the addition of the chime bars, students will be able to play their compositions in addition to singing. This will add a new dimension to the story and give the students more autonomy in their creative play. In first grade, we compose our own color melodies using our favorite colors and known pitches mi, so, and la. We combine our composition into a larger form of ABA with the song, The Colors Are Gliding by Lynn Kleiner to which we improvise in F pentatonic. We also add movement scarves, metallophones, and xylophones. However, with the addition of chime bars, students would have the freedom to continue the creative movement while playing, which is not possible with the xylophones. For second grade, we always spend time improvising in pentatonic once we have learned do and re. Having chime bars opens many new possibilities for this pentatonic improvisation using singing, playing, and creative movement with student lead decisions and discoveries. This will make the learning even more impactful because it will be student led with student ownership.

Benefits to my students

In my classroom my students are actively making music. We sing or speak from day one of kindergarten. We improvise, collaborate, compose, sing, move and play instruments. All my curriculum is taught this way. Bringing chime bars into the curriculum will greatly enhance the learning environment. It will bring a new avenue to our composition, creative movement, and improvisation options. Having chime bars will give my students more choices to engage their imagination and creativity.

Budget Narrative

I have 18 students per section. I am asking for nine sets of chime bars so that half of the class will have access to them at a time. This will allow for my students to rotate through the instruments when learning a new concept. For Kindergarten specifically it would be enough chimes for each student to have their own. When working in small groups for composition it would allow for each group to have their own set of pentatonic chimes.
