The goal is to boost student engagement by providing them with the opportunity to safely explore with clay and expand our Fine Craft Studio course to include more ceramics-based projects, especially utilitarian objects.
This year, a small group of students learned basic hand-building techniques and subsequently created their own art supplies, including watercolor palettes, paintbrush rests, and water cups. They were so excited to see their glazed pieces finally come out of the kiln! They caught the ceramics bug! I would like for a full class of Fine Craft Studio students to be able to experience the same thrill of making their own useable art projects next school year.
I've found that the art of hand-building ceramics is very freeing to the mind and soul. In this digital age, working with clay not only boosts motor skills, but it also forces students away from electronics to create something with their own two hands. It gives them control of something all their own in a world that often seems so out of control. As students manipulate the clay, they don't have to be confined to just one idea. They can roll, pinch and coil until they get their desired result. Making art that they can use in their everyday lives gives even reluctant students something to look forward to. This increases student buy-in and uplifts confidence. It's pretty amazing to start with a ball of clay and end with a beautiful and functional shiny piece of art!
This will provide a year's worth of clay and glaze necessary for a full class.
