Goal

The goal of A Cool and Calm Classroom is to enable students to flourish socially, promoting their overall growth and well-being. 

What will be done with my students

Schools are increasingly recognizing the importance of identifying children with social communication disorders, as these students face significant challenges in using both verbal and nonverbal language for social interactions. These social communication difficulties often accompany academic learning challenges, yet programs to address these issues tend to focus primarily on academics, leaving social communication needs unaddressed. The inability to communicate effectively in social settings can have lasting impacts throughout a child's life. Since school is a vital environment where children engage with peers, it presents a unique opportunity for them to develop and practice essential social skills.

With this grant, I aim to transform students' social communication skills by providing targeted instruction in social skills and problem-solving techniques. My approach will leverage the power of social stories, complemented by calming tools and engaging children's literature, to create a supportive and effective learning experience. These materials from this grant will be used for multiple years throughout multiple grade levels grades K-2 with Support Facilitation students.  

Benefits to my students

By emphasizing the importance of social communication skills, I strive to empower my students with self-confidence and the ability to navigate social situations successfully. They will learn not only how to initiate and maintain engaging conversations but also how to interpret social cues and develop vital skills like problem-solving and conflict resolution. Mastering these social skills is essential for a child’s emotional health and overall well-being. Without strong friendships, school can become a challenging and isolating experience. My ultimate goal is to cultivate a calm and nurturing classroom environment where every child feels valued and connected. 

Budget Narrative

The funds will be used to purchase 40 different Social Stories that focus on self-control and emotional regulation skills. I will also buy recommended children's books to help introduce and reinforce these self-regulation skills. Additionally, supplemental materials from Lakeshore Learning have been requested to enhance the program and provide further support. These resources will be utilized for multiple years across various grade levels, specifically for Support Facilitation students in grades K-2.
