To provide an interactive surface to model the graphs of functions. The coordinate planes are made of material that clings to existing whiteboards and/or windows. The surfaces are large enough for teachers to use during whole group instruction and will fit on the teacher table for small group instruction. There will be enough per classroom to have multiple pairs of students working concurrently on the existing whiteboards.
Students will graph at a large scale which affords them the opportunity to work together while graphing functions. Teachers can easily make formative assessments and guide learning due to the larger scale and the fact that the planes can cling to different classroom surfaces.
Large scale graphing is easier than working on small 8 1/2" x 11" paper coordinate planes. Students' work will be easily visible to the teacher and the other students. This provides many opportunities for discussion, reasoning, explanation, and learning not just for the one or two students at work but also to the whole group.
Each 8th grade math teacher gets one magnetic dry erase coordinate plane (30"x 30") and 7 cling dry erase coordinate planes (24" x 24") (one teacher will get 8 of the smaller planes).
