Nassau Education Foundation

Goal: My goal is to bring more agricultural opportunities to our school, Hilliard Elementary. This small farming opportunity would allow students to gain knowledge of life skills, science, encourage teamwork, and allow students to have a deeper understanding of where our food comes from and the importance of farming. The chickens would allow students the opportunity to share responsibility while learning how to care for animals appropriately. Personally, this would allow me the opportunity to share my personal chickens and experiences. I would personally donate chickens from my own flock and take them home over breaks, etc to care for them.

What will be done with my students

Students across our school will have the opportunity to care for animals, learn the life-cycle of chickens, and will allow for teamwork opportunities.

Benefits to my students

This project would benefit our entire school community. Different classes and students would have the opportunity to care for the animals. The chickens and the process of taking care of the coop could also be a sensory experience/break for students who may need it as well as an incentive and earned learning experience. This would allow students to learn and experience the life-cycle of a chicken firsthand. If eggs were fertilized, this would allow the school the opportunity to have access to their own eggs to hatch within classrooms or used as an opportunity for a science lab. Not only would this allow for agricultural, science, and behavioral opportunities, this could also foster a love of reading for students. Students could read to the chickens, building fluency and accuracy. The opportunities are both exciting and endless!
