Goal

-Enhance student learning and exploration by more instrumentation
-improve my students ability to keep steady beat
-Aid in the learning of chord structure and harmony

What will be done with my students

Activities:
1. Steady beat- My students use movement and barred instruments to understand the difference between steady beat and rhythm. By having a solid bass bar keeping the beat students can internalize the pulse.

2. Accompanying songs- Barred instruments are used to accompany songs we learn. These accompaniments add harmony and create chords to add to the song we are learning. For example: 4th grade students learn the melody to a song about Hannukah. In addition to this melody, the bass instruments play a chord bordun to keep the pulse as well as harmonize the melody being played.

3. Orff Ensmble: Every spring I run an instrumental ensemble. This ensemble (pictured above) uses barred instruments, drums, singing and movement to perform a wide array of music. The Orff ensemble encourages students to be creative, improvise melodies and movement and work together with their classmates to create music.

Implementation: These bass bars would be implemented immediately to continue my students study of harmony, melodies and accompaniment

One time or permanently integrated: These instruments would be permanently integrated as they can be used for a variety of lessons and uses such as accompaniment, chords, harmony and melody playing.

Connection to curriculum- The bass bars directly help student experience rhythm, keeping steady beat, harmony, chords and accompaniment

Benefits to my students

My students experience music by playing, moving, creating and improvising. Adding these bass bars will give them an extra tool by which to further their learning. All of my students will be able to use these bars to keep steady beat, provide harmony or simply create a melodic pattern.

Budget Narrative

I have on average between 17-24 students per class. There will be multiple opportunities for all students to use these bars through rotation and multiple lessons covering various topics.
