The goal would be to use this resource to create mini lessons that open students' minds to the world outside of the classroom while helping them with their comprehension skills.
This resource will be used to create small group lessons for Intensive Reading students to read together. This will help students with their fluency, comprehension, and real world connections to the world around them. Students are more engaged with reading materials when they are relevant to their lives, and even add a little bit of color to their reading materials. Breaking down these resources, and chunking them, into digestible pieces for students will help with their learning process of the material.
The benefits that this resource would have for my students would be to help them find joy in reading. When students find something they like to read, they tend to have more buy-in with the lesson they are learning about. This is important at the high school age for struggling readers because they need materials that are relevant to them and their situations. Having videos and articles that correlate with one another provides engaging materials for all types of learners within the classroom setting.
These resources can be expensive, but all resources can be reused for years to come.
This $330 will pay for a full year of magazine articles for three Intensive Reading classrooms, digital magazines for all students, videos that correlate with each article, and all digital teacher materials that go along with each article. That is a yearly total of 390 magazines put in the hands of Intensive Reading teachers and students.
