Nassau Education Foundation

The goal of the Creative Cross-Curricular Cultivation grant is to provide students with project based learning opportunities that would allow them to review and apply learned skills in an engaging and exciting way! All third graders at Bryceville Elementary would experience these fun, culminating learning units because the third grade teachers plan and implement the same lessons in their classes. Students would review skills in math, reading, science, and writing to complete projects based on themes from the Benchmark Reading Curriculum. These project based learning units would include room transformations, role-play, positive academic challenges, cross-curricular connections, and cooperative learning. This grant could help provide materials that would make third grade students enthusiastic about learning, which would positively impact their academic growth.

Goal

The goal of the Creative Cross-Curricular Cultivation grant is to provide students with project based learning opportunities that would allow them to review and apply learned skills in an engaging and exciting way! What will be done with my students

This grant would help to provide hands-on, engaging tools that would excite students about learning, this year and for classes in the future. The idea behind this grant is to give students the opportunity to combine skills learned from multiple subject areas, to complete culminating projects, based on a unit theme. This would allow students to practice and review content for all subjects in a fun and memorable way. For example, students could complete a project based learning unit on plants. Students would use their knowledge of perimeter and area to design their own garden and research what plants would grow best in their climate. They could plant and grow their own seeds to further their understanding of plant needs and life cycles. Students could then measure, document, and chart plant growth to compare and discuss with their partners. Even art and fractions could also be incorporated. Students could create their own fraction flowers and answer fraction questions based on their designs. The possibilities are endless! Cross-curricular concepts would be combined to provide students with a wide range of skills to review. This project based learning style would help students see how all subjects are connected and are important. To make this project even more exciting, students would experience room transformations and dress up to fit the theme, while collaborating with a partner or group to complete hands-on tasks. If the grant is funded, I intend to incorporate this project throughout the entire year with one creative cross-curricular cultivation project per nine weeks. The themes would correlate with our reading curriculum and include: Plants, Weather, Movie Theater, and Fairy Tales/Fables. Students would experience a new theme every nine weeks and it would include curriculum related, hands-on, group activities, and learning opportunities. The money would be spent to purchase themed materials for reading, math, writing, and science, that could be used year after year. I would then only need to replenish consumable items for the hands-on experiments, as needed. This project would benefit all current third grade students and all future third grade students at Bryceville Elementary School.

Benefits to my students

This project would benefit all current third grade students and all future third graders at Bryceville Elementary. Students would experience the excitement of project based learning which would lead to increased engagement and understanding. Working with peers, and practicing with hands-on tools would better enable students to achieve higher level critical thinking and collaborative skills. The third grade team at BES would work together to implement the materials provided from this grant to make learning engaging, fun, and meaningful!
