Nassau Education Foundation

The goal of the apple-themed room transformation is to create an engaging, hands-on learning environment that integrates STEAM through interactive apple-themed activities. This transformation will foster curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity by allowing students to explore concepts such as life cycles, physics, counting, engineering structures, and artistic expression—all centered around apples. By immersing students in a themed environment, the room will enhance their learning experience, making abstract concepts more tangible and enjoyable.

What will be done with my students

With your support, we can enhance this experience with resources that bring these lessons to life. This room transformation would take place one time a year. All of the kindergarten classes would have an opportunity to visit the room and participate in the following planned STEAM centers:
1. "Welcome to Apple-Brick Farm" – Students will utilize fine motor skills and creativity by following a visual guide to build and model their own red barn, farm fencing, and apple trees.
2. “Ten Apples on Top” – Following the read aloud story written by Dr. Suess, students will work on the skill of measurement and comparison with a partner. Using cut pool noodles and plastic apples, students would work on building a balance tower taller than themselves, with a partner’s help. They will be tasked with using comparison vocabulary such as “taller, shorter, longer, etc.”
3. “Tippy Apple Towers” – Students would work on balancing in this center. With their teammates, students will practice standing up different stacking and non-stacking objects (cups, paper towel holders, etc.) attempting to balance an apple on top of each. Their goal is to find the structure that holds apples weight the best.
4. "Apple Print Creations"– A colorful art center where kids cut apples in half, dip them in paint, and stamp unique patterns onto paper, exploring texture, symmetry, and creativity!
5. "Farmer’s Market Fun” – A lively dramatic play center where kids run a farm stand, sorting and categorizing fruits and veggies by shape, size, color, and weight while engaging in imaginative play and learning!
6. "Leaf & Pom-Pom Pick-Up" – A hands-on center where students use different types of tweezers to move felt leaves and pom poms, noting differences in color, size, and shape, strengthening fine motor skills while having fun!

Benefits to my students

Each year, from August to early October, all of our Kindergarten classrooms begin the year with an immersive learning environment celebrating apples, fall, plant life cycles, and farm life. These engaging themes provide the foundation for hands-on experiences across all subject areas.
Reading – Students explore informational texts about apples and farms, developing their ability to identify the main idea and key details.
Science – Through interactive labeling activities, students dive into the life cycles of plants, discovering how apples grow from seed to fruit.
Math – Balance and weight become real-world concepts as students investigate measurement and stability using apples and other provided materials.
A fall-themed room transformation would directly benefit all of the Kindergarten teachers and their students within our school. Beyond the immediate classroom, this engaging learning environment could also serve as an inspiration for additional early childhood educators looking to implement hands-on, thematic instruction. By integrating STEAM activities into our fall curriculum, this transformation would provide students with meaningful, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

Budget Narrative

This budget supports the creation of an apple/fall-themed STEAM learning environment that will enhance student engagement and hands-on learning. All materials purchased will be durable and mostly reusable, allowing for annual implementation of this thematic experience.

Materials & Justification

Science & Engineering Supplies ($40.72)
- Apple tree building materials to support hands-on exploration in engineering of trees and their fruit.
- Craft supplies for designing a red barn with fencing, reinforcing STEAM concepts through artistic expression.

Art & Creativity Materials ($29.29)
- Washable paint and stamping tools for apple print art projects that encourage creativity and fine motor skill development.

Literacy & Immersion Resources ($43.60)
- Materials to build "10 Apples on Top" following a read aloud.
- Room decor to further immerse students in their environment.

Dramatic Play & Math Centers ($69.95)
- A farm stand with play produce to help students categorize by shape, size, and weight while engaging in real-world role-playing experiences.
- Math manipulatives (plastic apples, measuring tools) to explore balance, weight, and measurement concepts.

Long-Term Impact
Almost all purchased materials are designed for multi-year use, ensuring that this engaging, thematic STEAM experience benefits future Kindergarten classes as well as current. This investment will create an annual, highly-enriched learning environment that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and hands-on discovery each fall.

With this funding, we will transform a campus classroom into an interactive space where students explore STEAM concepts through the lens of apples, fall, and farm life—making learning both meaningful and fun!
