The goal is to enhance the reading skills and build the self confidence of Exceptional Education Students (ESE) by providing access to a diverse and engaging collection of books.
Decodable readers will be used with ESE students to practice phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension in a structured manner. They will allow the students to practice these strategies using decodable readers that are appropriately challenging but not frustrating. The readers will align with the phonics curriculum used in the Gen Ed Classroom, but will target the specific needs of the ESE students. The readers will also target the reading standards and comprehension skills taught in the Gen Ed classroom.
Using decodable readers will help ESE students develop an understanding of how sounds correspond to letters and letter combinations to strengthen their phonemic awareness. They allow students to practice reading words that follow predictable phonetic patterns. As a result, students gain fluency and confidence in their reading abilities. Decodable readers provide ESE students with success-oriented reading experiences. When students can read words independently, their confidence grows, making them more willing to engage with text and try more challenging material.
Books will be used by Kindergarten through 3rd grade Support Facilitation teachers with their ESE students.
