Goal

The goal is for students to learn about the life cycle of chickens through hands on learning and how to properly care for chickens.

What will be done with my students

Students will observe and participate in turning chicken eggs throughout their 21 day incubation period. During this time we will discuss the life cycle of chickens by reading books, completing writing assignments and having discussions during our science time. Students will be able to see and discuss what is happening each day in the egg through hands on manipulatives and models. Once the chickens hatch, students will learn about proper techniques and routines to help take care of the chickens.
This will be a yearly project for third grade each year and will tie into third grades science curriculum of classifying animals. These materials are all able to be reused with only the fertilized eggs and feed needing to be purchased or donated each year.

Benefits to my students

This will benefit all third grade students at our school (about 35-40 students each year). Both classrooms will be able to see the life cycle of chickens and how to properly care for them. At the end of the unit, students will be given the opportunity to adopt the chickens or they will be added to our schools chicken coop for our agriculture club to learn more about and all students to observe. We live in an area where a lot of people have their own chickens. I hope for students to be able to learn at an early age how to care for fertilized eggs, chicks, and mature chickens.

Budget Narrative

All materials are doubled to be used in both third grade classrooms at our school. Materials included are multiple books on chicken life cycle, books on how to care for chickens and to learn more/engage students about chickens.
Brooder box and water/feeders for once chickens hatch.
Heat plates to safely warm the baby chicks before being old enough to move outside or be adopted.
Incubators to incubate the eggs during their 21 day cycle. Candlers to look inside the egg to check on development.
Two different hands on manipulatives and models of what is happening inside the egg each day for students to get a visual of the progress.
