Goal

My goal is that every 6th grade student will be able to explore the amazing world of tiny things too small for our eyes and to develop the love of science through the use of microscopes.

What will be done with my students

I plan to purchase a variety of student microscopes with prepared slides to increase engagement and help spark curiosity for science. The microscopes will help my students understand science better by allowing them to see details that they otherwise would never see. With a microscope my students can actually see the tiny building blocks of life making learning more real and memorable. The newly adopted 6th grade Savvas science textbook contains the topic “Cells and Living Things.” Throughout this topic the text refers to the use of microscopes multiple times. The students need to be able to identify the parts of a microscope as well as make observations about the characteristics present in living things. There are several labs in this textbook that require the use of a microscope, however my class does not have one at the moment. The microscopes will be used throughout the 6th grade school year. Yes, I did have lab money that has been consumed by other needed supplies that are a must throughout the school year for other science experiences. Therefore, for this reason I desperately need this grant for my classroom to add more real hands-on learning experiences while also meeting a standard.

Benefits to my students

There are many benefits to having microscopes in the classroom. Introducing microscopes to the students early would build a stronger foundation for higher level science courses throughout their school career. Microscopes also make science fun and engaging. Of course having microscopes would expand my students' experimental possibilities. It allows students to explore and discover things for themselves instead of just looking at pictures or watching videos. It too will help advance their knowledge on the cell theory and the characteristics of a cell while exploring that unit. Having these microscopes in my classroom will impact the entire 6th grade group of students that attend my school and would help fill a critical gap within my classroom. Thank you for considering this request. Your generosity will help shape the next generation of scientists.
