Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 80

I used my grant funds to purchase Algebra Nation Practice workbooks for three of my classes.  These workbooks are used weekly to expand on the concepts we review in class.  Each student has their own workbook that that keep in the classroom.  I am hopeful that we will see improved algebra 1 EOC scores in May through the ongoing use of these workbooks.  The workbooks offer applications with higher rigor that can be found in our textbooks.

An added, unknown benefit, to having the workbooks is that without them, we may not have had the online access to Algebra Nation!  That would definetly have been a hardship in the classes.  Algebra Nation does such a great job turning skills into applied practice and I would certainly have struggled without both the online access and the practice workbooks.

The proof is yet to come - I am excited to see student outcomes in May.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to obtain funding to purchase Algebra Nation Workbooks for each of the 2019-2020 Algebra 1 Students in Yulee High School. This funding request will meet the needs of 142 students. Additional funding will be sought to provide workbooks for the remaining need.

What will be done with my students

The Algebra 1 teachers have aligned their pacing guide to jointly use their textbooks and the Algebra Nation workbook. The textbooks and the textbook tools promote skill practice but do not fully provide the modeling and rigor that the students need in order to understand the higher-level concepts in Algebra 1.

Each student will be assigned a workbook which is used in conjunction with the Algebra Nation online content to practice and model mathematical standards in Algebra 1.

My students are also provided a copy of my pacing guide, so they always know which Algebra Nation topic interfaces with the textbook topic.

Benefits to my students

Using Algebra Nation workbooks in conjunction with the district approved textbook provides a higher level of rigor for the students. The textbooks begin the process, with focus on the skills required to solve problems. Algebra 1 takes this to a higher level with modeling on each of the algebra standards. In addition to the workbooks, the students have access to video tutorials, on-line tests, student walls where they share questions and more. The teachers have access to all the same, along with independent practice worksheets, mini-assessments and dynamic reporting tools.

Algebra Nation workbooks allow the students to watch videos, take notes in their own workbook and refer to the notes throughout the course of the terms. The workbook is an accompaniment to the textbook and notes they take in class.

Algebra Nation has been in place since 2014 and works continually with the state legislature to ensure that their material is current and relevant to the standards. This contrasts with textbook providers in that our textbooks, once provided are not updated for sometimes up to 5 years. Florida is in the process of updating their curriculum standards and by using Algebra Nation, teachers and students can be assured that the material is current.

Algebra Nation reports that students that have a high usage of Algebra Nation report a 26.2% higher average on end of course assessments versus students that do not utilize this excellent resource.
My students currently are assigned both textbook assignments and Algebra Nation assignments. What I love about Algebra Nation is that students can take a test in Algebra Nation and continue to retake it many times over to improve their scores. With each retake, comes new questions, so the students are not just “memorizing the answers” but watching the associated tutorials and learning to apply the concepts.

The workbooks are written in ways that the students understand, yet are rigorous and standards-aligned. The teachers have supplemental material that I use for exit tickets, entrance tickets and sometimes even tests. The students can use their workbooks as study tools.

Lastly, one major benefit of Algebra Nation and their tools is the comprehensive review that they do to prepare students for the end of course exam. The boot camp questions are aligned to the workbook so students can again reference their workbooks as they work through the end of course boot camp.

Budget Narrative

Prior to this year, the state provided funding for these workbooks, so I could order them for my class free of charge. This year the funding is not available, so I am asking for funding to purchase this vital tool for the Algebra 1 students. This is not a textbook replacement – it is the necessary addition to the textbook to allow the students to reach higher; making every lesson count.

This funding request will not provide workbooks for all as it is limited to $1000.00, but will provide for the majority of the students. If needed, additional funding will be requested through other means.
