Goal

To be able to provide a hands-on, enriching experience for all 7th grade science students. Through the use of frog dissection, the students will gain a deeper understanding of the different organ systems and the organs in each system.

What will be done with my students

The students will be able to each have a frog to dissect to understand the organ systems and organs. The dissection lab supplies will be used for many years to come by all teachers and students.

I purchased a dissection packet from Teachers Pay Teachers that I will use for the lab. The lab will take 2-3 days to complete. We will begin by reviewing the lab safety rules and expectations. The students will start the lab by examining and dissecting the external anatomy of the frog. They will then move onto the anatomy of the mouth and finally into the internal anatomy. Once inside the frog, they will examine each organ system in detail and notice the similarities between human and frog organ systems.
They will answer accompanying questions after each section of the dissection to check for understanding.

I will also conduct the dissection with my 8th grade students as they did not get to do it last year due to schools closing down.

Benefits to my students

My students will greatly benefit from this hands-on experience in a variety of ways. It will allow them to gain a better understanding of organ systems. It will provide them with enriching experiences and teach them how to properly follow step-by-step instructions in a science laboratory setting. It will prepare them for high school and college-level science laboratory classes and set the expectations for behavior in the science laboratory. Additionally, it will excite them and hopefully make them love science even more!

The general lab supplies will be able to be used year after year by all teachers and students.

Budget Narrative

The codes and prices are from the Nasco Education catalog. I have included the price per item in the Item column along with the quantity number.

I feel very strongly that the dissection of frogs inside the classroom allows the students an opportunity to understand the human body systems at a deeper level due to the fact that the frog’s body systems are very similar. While the frogs would be a consumable product used by my students this year, the general lab supplies would benefit all grade levels and could be used by a variety of teachers/students. Over time, the dissection tools become dull and rusted. The dissection trays become unusable after many, many years of use. Our dissection supplies need updating, as well as we are in need to additional supplies to meet the number of students we are working with.
