Student achievement continues to improve with using these amazing Orff xylophones. Listening skills have improved as students have compared and contrasted the different percussion timbre between woods and metals. (The resonance with these xylophones are quite beautiful!) The skill of reading music notation and playing the correct rhythm at the right time has improved. The skill of playing the correct melody - playing the correct note at the right place in ensemble has improved. Improvisation and creating music has been fun using a pentatonic scale or bordun accompaniments. It's good for students to create music on their own and using these instruments are perfect for just that! Since the solfege (do-re-mi's) and the individual note names (C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C...) are imprinted on each bar on the diatonic C scale, it is easy for students to play with precision. Even though these Orff xylophones are of the highest quality and built to last for decades to come, students have also gained practice in being responsible with the instruments in the classroom, being sure to take extremely good care of them. For example, students are taught to play softly and not to hit too hard. They know to walk around them and not to step over them, etc. They understand that these instruments are not toys! These specialized xylophones are what every music teacher hopes to have available in their classroom. I am so thankful to give our students the opportunity to play music on instruments that are such high quality!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

For all Pre-K - 2nd grade students at Southside to reap the cognitive, academic, and social benefits of music-making by actively engaging with these high-quality Orff xylophones and mallets (from West Music) in the music classroom setting.

What will be done with my students

Students will use these instruments...
* as tools to meet their learning goals outlined in the music curriculum and National Standards for Music Education and Florida's Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.
* to perform expressively a wide variety of music.
* to perform independently and cooperatively with others within an instrumental ensemble as they blend instrumental timbres, match dynamic levels, and respond to the cues of the conductor.
* to create, organize, and develop their own musical ideas (melodies, variations, and accompaniments) and artistic work then share it with others.

Benefits to my students

The benefits from using these melodic instruments are long-term. Not only do these durable high-quality instruments "last a lifetime", they would be used consistently throughout each school year. Students would be have multiple opportunities to use them from Pre-K through 2nd grade as they scaffold their musical knowledge and skills.

While using these melodic instruments within a cooperative learning community, students will
* deepen their understanding of musical concepts such as rhythm (long and short sounds), pitch (high and low sounds), and melody as they read music and compose their own.
* develop and refine their musical techniques of playing melodic instruments with accuracy and precision from year to year in the music classroom.
* inspire a love of music-making that will last a lifetime!
