Goal

Our goal is to increase the number of non-fiction and historical fiction books in our classrooms for student to read independently, in groups and as a full class.

What will be done with my students

The addition of these books to our class libraries will have multiple benefits. With a large number of biographies to choose from, the students can be assigned to read one according to personal preference, or select them according to topics such as women's history, famous scientists, African-American achievements, and so on. This is an area currently lacking in our curriculum. We are also in need of high quality historical fiction that is current and grabs student attention. These can be read in accordance with their social studies classes so they will bolster their knowledge in two subjects.

Benefits to my students

Students in grades 6-8 must demonstrate a greater proficiency in comprehending, analyzing and synthesizing content found from informational texts. The percentage of FSA Reading Text types that students will encounter in grades 6-8 is 40 percent literature and 60 percent informational. Students need more access to informational texts on a variety of topics, including biographies and history. Students who are exposed to more non-fiction and historical fiction will build important background knowledge, learn cross-curricular content and be able to use informational text through research for authentic learning purposes. Many of our students have very limited life experiences, and we can expose them to so much more through the addition of high quality texts like these in our curriculum.

Budget Narrative

We chose to order books from Barnes and Noble because they offer the library binding on the the Who is? biographies we seek, and with the Teacher Discount their prices on the same as Amazon on the other books.
