Nassau Education Foundation

Our classrooms are full of energetic and enthusiastic first grade students. They come in each day eager to learn, with a variety of life experiences and background knowledge. Many of our students have a military connection and have lived in a variety of places while other students may never have left the county. Each student, regardless of their background, comes in ready to learn! It is our hope that we can provide opportunities for our students that will lead them to become creative thinkers and risk takers through reading.

Goal

Our classrooms are full of energetic and enthusiastic first grade students. They come in each day eager to learn, with a variety of life experiences and background knowledge. Many of our students have a military connection and have lived in a variety of places while other students may never have left the county. Each student, regardless of their background, comes in ready to learn! It is our hope that we can provide opportunities for our students that will lead them to become creative thinkers and risk takers through reading.

What will be done with my students

This listening center would be a part of our daily center time. With these listening centers, our students would be able to listen as stories are read aloud to them. They will be able to follow along with the book as they listen, helping them develop valuable reading skills such as tracking text and recognizing words. The listening centers also supports English Language Learners by exposing them to the English Language while following along with the pictures. Through listening to stories, our students would be able to hear what fluent readers sound like. Children will be able to listen to a story that we are working on as a class and help them increase their reading comprehension skills.

Benefits to my students

This project will make our students so excited about books! They love putting on the headphones and following along as someone reads them a familiar book. These books and Cd's will give them the opportunity to have a variety of books in our class listening center.
