Nassau Education Foundation

We are introducing an Upstanders and Peer Mediation Program at YMS to focus on Character Traits and Acts of Random Kindness. A select group of students will be trained as Conflict Resolution specialists to promote a culture of kindness and promoting positive choices. Peer Mediation will also introduce to our students alternative ways to handle disagreements, conflicts in a more mature way and a structure student will be able to use independently as they become more familiar with the process.

Goal

We are introducing an Upstanders and Peer Mediation Program at YMS to focus on Character Traits and Acts of Random Kindness. A select group of students will be trained as Conflict Resolution specialists to promote a culture of kindness and promoting positive choices. Peer Mediation will also introduce to our students alternative ways to handle disagreements, conflicts in a more mature way and a structure student will be able to use independently as they become more familiar with the process.

What will be done with my students

Each month the entire school will be introduced to a different Character Trait along with a corresponding Upstander Goal. The goals will be posted and discussed in the Zero Period and reinforced throughout the school day. Students will be encouraged not to be bystanders through role play, discussions and lessons about others who have been Upstanders and not Bystanders. The Florida Department of Education Comprehensive Health Standards focus on cultivating an environment where mental and emotional health should be an important part of the academic day. The DOE standards also discuss the influence of family, peers, culture, media and other technology on the health of teens.

Benefits to my students

The goal of the program is to provide a less stressful, more positive environment for student learning. This program will also involve the students in making changes within themselves that will influence the culture of negative behavior being the norm or accepted behavior. If the students feel welcomed in an environment that is safe, they will feel more comfortable and their academic success will be increased. Thus the academic growth of students will increase overall. This will also allow the students to enhance their skills for future years when they attend college or join the workforce, so the impact is a life long change, not just temporary.

Budget Narrative

The hallways of each building will have the focused Character trait displayed and lessons and curriculum will be provided to Zero Period teachers. We plan to display banners in the cafeteria and gymnasium with the Character trait keeping it visually in front of students and faculty/staff alike. Small flags will also be placed around the common areas such as walkways and the center courtyard.

The curriculum will be based on the training received from the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. Further information on the Foundation can be found at their website: flholocaustmuseum.org
