Nassau Education Foundation

As the Reading Coach at Hilliard Middle-Senior High School, my goal is for students to be highly engaged and excited about reading in the middle school classroom. Another goal is for students to learn about social studies and current events while applying reading skills and strategies. I would like to supplement the reading curriculum with Junior Scholastic magazines for students. The high interest magazines are written for students in grades 6-8. The subscription for this magazine is for one academic school year. Different magazines arrive each month of the school year.

What will be done with my students

This activity will be integrated in the Reading classrooms during the 2019-2020 school year. Students will be reading the highly engaging magazines at teacher station and at literacy station. While at teacher station, students will interact with the text, teacher, and with their peers. There will be discussion about the content, as well as, reading skills (ex. vocabulary, comprehension, main idea, making inferences). While at literacy station, students will have a choice as to which articles to read. They will read with peers and have discussion and complete activities that tie in with the article being read. This grant ties in with our current curriculum because the Reading classroom is the perfect place to integrate social studies and science.

Benefits to my students

Students will have a choice when it comes to reading. They will be able to choose what they want to read, based on what interests them. Students will increase their knowledge of social studies content and of reading skills. They will practice and master important social studies and reading standards. All middle school students (329) and Reading teachers (6) will benefit from this request. These magazines will supplement the current reading curriculum.

Budget Narrative

Each of the 6 Middle School Reading teachers at Hilliard Middle-Senior High School will receive 10 student magazines (total of 60 student magazines) to use in their classrooms. Each student magazine costs $8.49 for a total of $509.40.
