Goal: The goal of the “Let's Master Reading and Math “project is for my students to be well versed and competent in the academic specific vocabulary that is essential for my students to understand concepts in order to be successful with the Florida Standards. Research that has been completed has shown that in order for students to truly grasp a concept and put it into long term memory they need to have a deep understanding of the academic vocabulary that goes along with the concept. For instance, in order for students to become successful readers they need to be well versed and competent with the vocabulary areas of antonyms, synonyms, homophones, homonyms, prefixes/suffixes and know how to use context clues to understand the meanings of unknown words in passages. For math they need to be able to know the specific vocabulary to help them know what to do with word problems. Through the use of these Hot dots, I will be able to work with my students to gain the academic vocabulary they will need to develop better comprehension, fluency and accuracy skills within their reading and math domains.

Goal

Goal: The goal of the “Let's Master Reading and Math “project is for my students to be well versed and competent in the academic specific vocabulary that is essential for my students to understand concepts in order to be successful with the Florida Standards. Research that has been completed has shown that in order for students to truly grasp a concept and put it into long term memory they need to have a deep understanding of the academic vocabulary that goes along with the concept. Through the use of these Hot dots, I will be able to work with my students to gain the academic vocabulary they will need to develop better comprehension, fluency and accuracy skills within their reading and math domains.

What will be done with my students

The Hot Dots materials that are being requested will provide my students with the necessary tools in order to become successful vocabulary masters in both reading and math. This individualized learning experience will allow my students to come to my teacher table and spend a few minutes to go over their academic vocabulary. This learning system provides students with an interactive pen and questions cards. Students are instructed to read the cards and then use the pen to select their answer. The pen then tells the student if they answered the question correctly or not by lighting up either green or red. Once my students have answered their question I will extend on the vocabulary word, and ask them to give me an example to move it up to more higher order thinking once they master the specific academic vocabulary word they were working on. In order to ensure that I am providing differentiated learning opportunities for my students I will use the data that I have collected and create specific bags that they are to work on. With that said each student will have their own set of cards that they will work on and once they master a word they will move up and I will replace it with a new one. This allows students to truly take this academic vocabulary and master it, because throughout the school year I will be able to put words back into their bag, and make sure that they have truly mastered the academic vocabulary. This will help them to be successful and will also keep them engaged because they will all have their own pen and question cards to work on.

Benefits to my students

Research has been completed to support that when students are proficient with academic vocabulary they are better able to perform with comprehension, fluency and accuracy skills in both reading and math. The benefit to my students is that through the use of these Hot Dots, they will be actively engaged to review their necessary vocabulary that will help them to be successful in years to come and in everyday situations. I strongly believe that with the grant of these Hot Dots to my classroom, I will be able to help my students become successful learners and masters of reading and math vocabulary!

Budget Narrative

Total: $478.77
With this money I would be able to purchase 6 Hot Dot pens and a variation of reading and math materials that I would be able to use the Hot Dots with in order for my students to become "Masters of Reading and Math". The Hot Dot pens need to have specific materials that it matches with in order to correspond and light up if the answer is correct or not.
After research and finding the cheapest costs some of the items were found cheaper on Amazon, and some of the items were found on Educational Insights.
The purpose of having so many different materials is to best differentiate. Some of my students still need work with phonics, which is why I have two bundles of phonics work.
All of my students need grade level specific academic vocabulary for math, reading and science which is why I added in the other materials.
Thank you for taking time to read my grant proposal.
