Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

Teachers are using the mentor texts during their Reading mini-lessons.  This is where students see reading strategies in action and know how they can use them to be more successful readers.  Students are also having the opportunity to hear someone read aloud to them.  Research shows that there has been a huge decline in children hearing books read aloud.  This is the second school year that these books have been used in instructional lessons.  Each year approximately 200 students are impacted by this grant.

What will be done with my students

Interactive Read Alouds will be part of the mini-lesson in ELA and morning meeting through the Sanford Harmony program. Teachers will use mentor texts to help teach reading skills while integrating Social Studies. Selected books will also teach problem solving and character ed. Students will have the opportunity to relate to text and characters.

Benefits to my students

Students will observe teacher modelling of fluency, thinking aloud, as well as ELA standards. Students will be more engaged and resistant readers will be more motivated to read independently. Students will develop a love of reading.
