Nassau Education Foundation

Fernandina Beach High School is experiencing an influx of non-English speaking students. Currently we have over 30 ESOL students in our high school with an expected arrival of 9-20 more from FBMS and other schools. These students have limited English vocabulary skills. As teachers, we struggle to have materials for these students. We need engaging materials to help these students achieve success. A program titled ELL Teen Literacy Library is specially designed for English Language Learners in Grades 7-12. The product features low readability and photographs on each page to support comprehension with a focus on vocabulary acquisition. Progress is monitored in the form of assessments for each book. The content is high interest and covers five different genres, including Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. There is extensive support for every book. Currently we have no specific programs for our ELL students and teachers are having to modify and search for materials- often unsuccessfully. It is difficult to find programs that are specifically designed for various levels of English comprehension.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

We are enjoying our new literature for our non-English speaking students.  It is wonderful to have material that is easy to read but still on a high school level.  Before we received the grant we were having to use elementary materials that were insulting to our students' maturity level.  With the new Saddleback series our students can learn English and actually have interesting reading materials.  Our series includes vocabulary cards, worksheets, and tests.  We are so grateful to have materials to use with our high school students.  They are excited to read and learn.  Thank you so much

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Fernandina Beach High School is experiencing an influx of non-English speaking students. As teachers, we struggle to have materials for these students. We need engaging materials to help these students achieve success. It is difficult to find programs that are specifically designed for various levels of English comprehension.

What will be done with my students

Our students will be able to progress with their acquisition of the English language with materials that are designed for their individual levels. Students will be learning "survival" vocabulary to more advanced vocabulary- all based on their levels and comprehension skills. Students will be able to use individual technology as well as actual copies of texts.
Teachers will be able to modify materials to better serve their students.

Benefits to my students

Our students should be able to acquire English speaking and reading skills quicker and more proficiently with this program. They will be able to learn phonics, to decode, to develop and to discover a new language- a language that they need to become successful at school and in our community.
*Even though our ELL students are being targeted with this grant, all struggling readers could benefit from this program.
