Nassau Education Foundation

"She is so excited to stay after school!" These words are embedded in my mind as I create new lessons for our after-school tutoring program. Last year, I changed our after-school Reading tutoring program to include more high interest books. In addition to including these books, I created a STEM project or hands-on activity which accompanied each book. From creating pyramids with toothpicks and marshmallows to visiting to the Jacksonville Zoo on a field trip, our students in the after-school reading tutoring program have enjoyed reading these books and activities. Therefore, my goal for next year is to purchase additional books for our after-school tutoring program. Furthermore, I want to spark a love for reading and learning as students are able to experience their reading.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 21

Our students who have participated in our 3rd Grade After School Tutoring Program have grown tremendously with their reading!  At the beginning of the year, only 10% of our students were reading at a third grade level.  However, at this time (middle of the year), 62% of our students are reading at a third grade level!  Furthermore, 48% of our students have made a year's growth at this time.  This data is based on their i-Ready Reading Diagnostic taken at the beginning of the year (August) and at the middle of the year (December).

More importantly, our students have grown to love reading!  They are excited to come to tutoring and begin a new book!  Thank you Nassau Education Foundation for giving our students the opportunity to read and explore new books!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

The books I am requesting to purchase will allow our students to learn about different high-interest topics which include space, robots, biographies, and various types of literature. Next September, we would begin our tutoring program with the biography study. As we read biographies, students will also be creating an autobiography box. These autobiography boxes will be displayed for our Open House at the end of the month. With the space series, we will study the planets in our solar system and the lifestyle of astronauts in space. Our STEM activity for this series will be creating a sun dial to track how the Earth rotates around the Sun and creating a model solar system (this includes the Sun, all planets, and the asteroid belt). Our robot series will focus on how robots and simple machines work and make our life easier. The activity associated with this series will be a field trip to SALLY Corporation and Krispy Kreme donuts to watch robots and simple machines in action. Our study of various types of literature will focus on students learning how to determine the theme of a story. As we are learning different life lessons, we will focus on applying these lessons by assisting the Beta Club with their Thanksgiving and Christmas drive for needy families in our community.

Benefits to my students

One of the benefit for my students will be an increase in their love for reading. As they are read high-interest books and participate in different activities, students will be enjoy learning. Furthermore, students will become more confident readers which will positively affect their classroom grades and performance on standardized testing.

Budget Narrative

Each book has been carefully selected to match the STEM project or hands-on activity. I will purchase these books at the beginning of the school year from the following companies - Benchmark Education, BookSource, akj Education, and Engage Literacy. I am purchasing multiple copies of each book so each student or pair of students will have his/her own copy.
