Nassau Education Foundation

The goal for science classes is to involve each student during daily instruction. I will have 100% participation and engagement when students can use a 3D printer to create their vision, see how the vision comes to life, and use manipulatives to grasp the concept. Science is about hands-on experiments for the students to hypothesize and develop real-world, problem solving skills. The objective of science classes is to investigate all areas including earth & space, physical, and life science.
Giving them the capability to actually manufacture their own evidence will put the “WOW” factor in the lesson, and hopefully spark their interest in science. I believe this will engage all of the students and ignite a passion for STEM classes. If we can build it, and they can see it, they will become more engaged.
I currently have a mystemkits grant (company website: www.mystemkits.com) through cpalms. However, the older 3D Dremel printer we currently have is clogging and not finishing printing. The customer representative with whom I have been talking for technical support, has given me a quote for a new printer. The Robo E3 3D printer will be easier for the students to use and will speed up the printing process to allow less time between jobs. This printer was designed for education and works with the MyStemKits per the customer service representative. (See my quote above)

What will be done with my students

In my science class, students would benefit from making a built-to-scale animal or plant cell model kit on the 3D printer. Their project this year was to make a three dimensional model of a plant or animal cell. However, having the built-to-scale model would deepen the level of understanding, so they reach the higher level and thought process. Cell theory is a difficult concept to understand, and a standard that is taught in all high school science, classes science, at all levels. Using the stem kits to introduce the idea in a true scale model, will help students retain the material for future years. Giving my students the technological advantage to build Mystemkits.com tools will deepen their knowledge and appreciation of science.

Benefits to my students

I have found the best way to engage and have all the students involved is to have hands-on activities and science labs. The 3D printer and stem kits will activate new lessons and bring science to life. I believe this will also intrigue the students to explore computer science and coding classes as well, and prepare them for the future.
Once the students understand how the mystemkits manipulatives are built the students can begin to develop their own projects without the templates. Students can excel at their individual levels and continue to build in each science class throughout their high school years.
