Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 33

As I introduced and taught the standards this year, I was able to use the books I purchased to supplement the instruction.  Students were able to read and answer questions concerning such standards as main idea, point of view, text structure, author's purpose and theme.  After reading the books, students were able to take Accelerated Reader tests on the books so that helped, as well.  Students enjoyed the mentor texts and I know they were instrumental in helping students understand the rigorous 4th grade standards, in a more enjoyable and hands on way.  Thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to build a classroom library with mentor texts that will teach specific skills and strategies through authentic literature and informational text.

What will be done with my students

Teacher and students will read the books in small groups and identify skills such as main idea, inferences, context clues, text structure, point of view, story elements, theme, and author's purpose. The classroom library will also be updated with new books to motivate and encourage independent reading.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to my students will be access to mentor texts during small group instruction when introducing and practicing specific skills and strategies. Books are more engaging for the students and when practicing a difficult skill, using authentic text is more beneficial than using text from test prep materials. They will also have access to new and engaging books to choose during independent reading time.

Budget Narrative

These books can be used year after year in my classroom, so this is not a consumable expense. We will have these books available to share across the grade-levels, as well as for use in our tutoring program, so the reach of this expense is across campus.
