Nassau Education Foundation

Scholastic magazines fit seamlessly into the reading instruction we already teach and will encourage cross-curricular vocabulary and non-fiction texts. The articles are relevant and engaging. Upfront magazine is a high-quality resource that will present my students with new content in the form of nonfiction texts. The goal of using Upfront magazine in my classroom will be to introduce new vocabulary, close read nonfiction articles, have real and relevant discussions, all while teaching the standards of reading to prepare my students for state testing.

Goal

Scholastic magazines fit seamlessly into the reading instruction we already teach and will encourage cross-curricular vocabulary and non-fiction texts. The articles are relevant and engaging. Upfront magazine is a high-quality resource that will present my students with new content in the form of nonfiction texts. The goal of using Upfront magazine in my classroom will be to introduce new vocabulary, close read nonfiction articles, have real and relevant discussions, all while teaching the standards of reading to prepare my students for state testing.

What will be done with my students

Every subscription of Upfront Magazine includes articles, teacher's guides, skills sheets, videos and access to multiple reading levels for differentiation. My students will have the opportunity to use this magazine on a weekly basis to review the standards necessary for state testing. The opportunity to have nonfiction texts at their fingertips with articles that are relevant to them will be hugely beneficial. They will be introduced to new vocabulary and the standards easily reviewed and assessed with Upfront magazine.

Benefits to my students

Scholastic Upfront magazine will engage my students with nonfiction texts. This magazine will help my students become well informed in issues of national and international importance. Upfront magazine will give my students the confidence to think critically about today's news stories. Each article connects directly with our curriculum and standards. The magazine will be used in small groups to close read the articles and have guided questions to guide their conversations about the issues presented.

Budget Narrative

Currently, there are 3 9th grade teachers at HMSHS. I am requesting 30 copies of each issue of Scholastic Upfront magazine so that each teacher can have 10 issues to use with their classes. The yearly subscription includes 14 issues and they are $9.99 each plus shipping and handling.
