Goal

Science is augmented through exploratory labs. My goal is to enrich their understanding, and give them 1st hand experience of the subject matter through these essential labs.

What will be done with my students

Students will carry out labs for 14 topics. These are well established, and comprehensive applications.Replenishment of consumables are manageable, so these kits can be used year after year. These kits are used throughout the semester, so completion would be by semester's end.
The following kits are included in this Grant Request:
• Mapping Earthquakes and Volcanoes—Student Activity Kit
• Specific Heat and Climate—Student Laboratory Kit
• Exploring Groundwater—Activity-Stations Kit
• Physical and Chemical Properties of Soil—Student Laboratory Kit
• Stream Macroinvertebrate Sampling Simulation—Student Activity Kit
• Discover Life in the Soil—Student Laboratory Kit
• Duckweed Population Study—Student Laboratory Kit**
• Landfill Decomposition—Student Laboratory Kit
• Common Uses of Rocks and Minerals—Student Laboratory Kit
• Wind Energy—Student Laboratory Kit
• Build a Solar Cell—Student Laboratory Kit
• Environmental Pollution—Student Laboratory Kit
• Environmental Pollution and Lichens—Student Laboratory Kit
• Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming—Student Laboratory Kit

Benefits to my students

Hands-on laboratory science experiences are critical to the learning process. Research has shown that students who engage in well-designed laboratory experiences develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, as well as gain exposure to reactions, materials, and equipment in a lab setting. Sustained investments in hands-on experiences help inspire students to further their education and prepare them for high-technology careers by fostering skills sought by potential employers.

Budget Narrative

Cost per student is $15.50 for 1 semester. Reusing the kits for 2 semesters cuts that in half to $7.75/Child. These kits are reusable year after year, with minimal consumable replenishment. Over a 10 year period, the cost per child (without consumable replenishment) is $0.78. The 10 year period is reasonable, in that I have had kits for that long in Biology.
