Nassau Education Foundation

The FBHS and YHS Gifted students enrolled in the Literature and the Arts courses will be studying art from Paleolithic times to Ancient times. Students will be introduced to artwork, artists and why art was created for the major time periods and art styles.

Students who are enrolled in these classes earn an art credit. They will be exposed to varying works of art and will create works of art themselves in order to better understand the artwork and time period.

My goal is to introduce students to the ancient process of glass mosaic making, especially at the height of the Roman Empire in which there are still hundreds of mosaics that have survived. Students will study these works and find inspiration in creating their own glass mosaic connecting to past cultures and using math and ratio proportions to draw and create their mosaic.

Goal

What will be done with my students

By studying ancient mosaics students will understand why and how ancient cultures used this technique to decorate their buildings. Students will research surviving mosaics from museums and archaeological sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. Students will decipher these mosaics and learn how to interpret their symbols. Students will then find inspiration in this ancient art form to then create their own original glass mosaic using similar processes as the ancients did.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn about ancient mosaics, the purpose and process of this art form. In turn, students will gain a unique position in which they become the artist and create their own glass mosaic. This process allows students to connect further with their studying by actually completing a hands-on activity that will further aid students to better understand how glass mosaics are made and to further appreciate the intricate nature and time it takes to produce such masterpieces.

Students will be able to understand and create an ancient process of mosaic making while creating a new spin on this traditional mode of art.

By creating their own artworks from this time period, students are able to connect to the artistry of the period and value works of art with a greater appreciation.

Students gain self-esteem by being able to make a personal work of art that they can be proud of and enjoy making.
