What will be done with my students

Students will engage in activities on comprehension, main idea, Fact/Opinion. Recognizing suspense and foreshadowing, analyzing main characters, sequencing, idioms and determining cause and effect. Students will increase their fluency with the English language by engaging in a variety of vocabulary exercises such as making analogies, using words in context, synonyms/antonyms, and making word associations. Students will also get review skills in punctuation and sentence structure while writing persuasive paragraphs, summarizing, creating journal entries and explaining feelings.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to students is that these novels can be used effectively with individual students, small groups and/or whole class. Students will be guided to establish a time frame for completion. For students that need a high degree of structure, a schedule will be set for them and they will read and work with the teacher. For students who can handle a more flexible approach-they will read and complete exercises at their own pace. These novels lend themselves to teacher-student conferences where the teacher can monitor progress, help students share their thoughts about what they are reading and how it relates to their own lives.
