Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 25

My students have truly enjoyed all of the activities that were purchased with the grant money. They loved the Bacteria expoloration and were amazed at the amount of bacteria in our everyday lives. We have also got our garden up and running and the seeds are starting to germinate! Next on our list is testing the soil around our school's fruit trees to see how we can improve the fruit they are producing. Thank you so much for your continued support to education. We still have a variety of activities to complete before the year is up, and the students are looking forward to all of them.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My students will use the kits to extend upon their classroom learning of the science standards for fifth grade and build a love and understanding of science.
The gardening materials will help my students to better understand how plants work and beautify the school.

What will be done with my students

Students will perform the various activities in the kits over the next school year. The students will get to learn how to test soil for a variety of bacteria, learn the effects of acid rain, and they will get to be crime scene investigators.
The kits I'm requesting are from www.homesciencetools.com. The soil testing kits will be used with our garden that we will plant in April to try to help the fruit trees on our school's property. The bacteria kits will help show students the importance of washing their hands, and keeping things clean and sanitary. The acid rain kit will tie into our lessons on weathering and erosion. The crime scene investigation lesson will help students to tie into the scientific method and the steps required to solve a problem.
All of these kits will be used for multiple years. They have enough materials to repeat the projects and any materials that need to be replaced, I will write further grants to replace them.
The gardening materials will be used this year to create our on garden at the school. My after school science club will use the materials to create, plant, and monitor a variety of vegetables and flowering plants. The garden will be able to be used year after year with only the cost of seeds and possibly additional soil. This activity ties into the third and fourth grade standards on plants, teaching students the parts, their functions, and their role in an ecosystem.

Benefits to my students

These activities will be used with my students to extend upon classroom lessons, though some of the lessons will be done with my after school science club. These units are intended to help instill a love of science and learning in each of my students. Hands on projects help to make ideas and lessons more concrete. STEM lessons help to tie in a multitude of subject areas to show students how subjects work together to solve problems.
These activities will reach approximately 20-25 students in my classroom and 20-25 students in my after school science club.

Budget Narrative

The above items are prices for one of each kit. The kits can be used for multiple years with my classroom students and after school club.
The gardening supplies are from Home Depot. These will be used year after year as well.
