Goal

To provide beneficial opportunities for our students within the community that will help build learning of essential, independent life skills through communication i.e. ordering at a restaurant, shopping skills, exchanging money, vocabulary development, social skills, self determination, pride and advocacy.

What will be done with my students

Twice each month, August thru May, students will go out into the community to practice life skills that have been previously taught in the classroom and Speech and Language therapy lab. Prior to going out into the community, students will learn and then role play the appropriate social and communication skills needed to be successfully independent within their community.

Benefits to my students

Special needs students require not only classroom instruction but continuous, hands on and real life situations to learn essential life skills. With ongoing community experiences our students gain self confidence, the ability to express their needs and become contributing, independent citizens. Ten students, two teachers and one Speech Pathologist will be attending these community based trips.
This school year, eight out of ten students were on free lunch and two were in the Families in Transition/FIT program. The Nassau Education Foundation Grant was very beneficial to all the students in the Transition Adult Program/ TAP by providing the means for our students to participate in a variety of community based trips.

Budget Narrative

Thank you for considering our program for this grant. It will be helpful to many of our students who lack the means to help pay for these community based experiences which are part of our transition adult curriculum.
