2018-2019 Grant for Uniforms for Career Experiences in the Community.

The funds from this  grant were used to purchase and maintain TAP uniforms for our students that have community based learning experiences through our business partners such as Publix, Osprey Village, Ft. Clinch and Winn Dixie.

Students were taught to dress for success and lessons were designed to teach them daily living skills about personal grooming and self-care, as they prepare for future employment.  After gathering personal information on their clothing and shoe size, they went on several shopping trips out in the community to make these purchases.  Two clothing racks were purchased so students could practice how to properly hang up and store their uniforms to be ready for work each day.  We were also able to purchase some work jackets which served a dual purpose.  They provided a professional look and more important, warmth for those who did not have appropriate outerwear when it was cold.

Thank you for helping our students look and feel thier best when they are working in the communituy!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will feel confident and look professional as they represent Nassau County in community based work experiences as they learn employment skills.

What will be done with my students

As part of Nassau County's Transitioning Adults Program (TAP - 18-22 program) students with significant needs, are enrolled in Career Experiences Courses where a significant part of their curriculum is working in the community. With support from school staff and our business partners they learn employment skills to prepare them for paid employment.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of having a standard uniform provided for students is two fold.

Seven of my ten students qualifies for free lunch with 5 of those students being in the homeless program (FIT). Providing uniforms would help students have a sense of pride in knowing that they have a quality uniform. Uniforms will be retained at school and students will be responsible for laundry as part of their curriculum.

Additionally, having a consistent uniform will add immediate recognition in the community and a professional representation of Nassau County Schools.

Budget Narrative

Except for the shirts, uniform items will be purchased at Wal-Mart for economical pricing. To ensure proper fit, students will be able to try on items and with guidance from school staff, make wise purchases.
