Goal

My goal is to get sets of books that my students can read with me in order to get them to see how reading can be fun while at the same time increasing their reading level by at least 1 grade level per STAR Reading Assessment.

What will be done with my students

I am a Reading and Math ESE support facilitation teacher for 18 students in 4th and 5th grades. The students I teach normally don't have any one at home that will read with them so they don't get to see the joy of reading modeled. I have individual books in my classroom, but not sets of books on their levels that I can read with my students. We will have daily reading groups that will be reading the same books while discussing story elements such as character(s)/traits, setting, cause/effect, plot, and creating book reports and reviews for other students that will be kept in the library. Some of the books requested address curriculum for Black History Month, Presidents Day, Career Day and science.

Benefits to my students

The main benefit of this project is that the students won't see reading as a chore or just reading to take an AR test, they will want to read more because they have a choice and will be reading with someone who wants to read with them. A side benefit will be that I see their reading levels increase across the curriculum by the end of the school year.
