Goal

A good story opens a door, takes you inside, and leaves you with images that can not be produced by dry science text. Through reading science based literature, students will become motivated to learn more about the topics alluded to in the story. . Who after reading "Little House on the Prairie" didn't want to learn more about that time and place? Also, as an added benefit, reading is the key to success

What will be done with my students

The class sets of Science based literature will be discussed in a book club atmosphere. The story and the science introduced in the story will be the main focus. Class sets can be used year after year and referenced when discussing the Science content. It will help build background knowledge, motivation to learn, and create a bridge between Science and Reading. Two subjects that are linked. Implementation can take place immediately and will be used across three grade levels. Technology can be used to download these books for lower level readers so every student can benefit.

Benefits to my students

Class books will be purchased for third through fifth grade. At present time, we have 6 teachers with approximately 100 students. The sets will be used indefinitely, as long as the book lasts. This resource will be used to motivate and educate hundreds of students. The outcome will be students who have a basic background of a topic they will be studying, exposure to science related vocabulary, and connections that can be used to learn science knowledge.

Budget Narrative

These books are highly recommended and are chosen to enhance the State standards, AIMS and District curriculum that is currently being taught with hands on materials. Twenty five books are needed for the class set. This will offer each teacher 2-3 choices for the year in grades 3-5. What a great start for a STEM inspired classroom library!
