Goal

We want to expose students to STEM lessons using high-tech simulators combined with scenario-based training. Students will use these tools/knowledge to conduct exercises in non-military aircraft carrier operations.

What will be done with my students

Thursday: The students will travel to Pensacola, Florida to stay "on board" an aircraft carrier simulator--CVT-11 "Ambition." It looks and sounds like a ship at sea.

Friday: Students will have intensive classes in aerodynamics, aircraft flight control, weather, navigation and radio communications/radar operations. They will then have to perform exercises requiring multilevel cooperation and problem solving under pressure.

Saturday: Before returning home, the students will enjoy a guided tour of the National Museum of Naval Aviation adjacent to "Ambition." The NMNA has made a top-ten list of the best museums in the US.

Benefits to my students

The CTV-11 "Ambition" provides a path to excite the students about technology. It may get them interested in STEM studies and high-tech fields, and let them explore whether a career in Aerospace may be their future. The National Museum of Naval Aviation depicts the history of aviation from earliest powered flight through space exploration.

For the teachers, "Ambition" Instructors are all STEM-certified and may provide examples of better ways to teach STEM to our students.

This will be our second trip (the first was 29 October 2015). The goal is to provide the opportunity to experience "Ambition" on an annual basis.

Budget Narrative

This grant would provide partial program fees. We are funding the trip for thirty (30) Students and four (4) Chaperones, and any grant money we may be awarded would go a long way towards reaching that goal.
