Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide supplemental materials to support the education of students and their parents in healthy choices supporting the whole child that can increase student achievement and provide a strong foundation for learning. The inspiration of this grant came from a Nutrition Night that we are planning for the YPS Action Team. This program could be used district wide at other schools or to present events such as the one we are offering to educate parents. In addition, these Nutrition and Wellness type materials can be implemented easily into our curriculum and classroom by providing literature, visuals and hands on learning opportunities. 

What will be done with my students

Making healthy choices trainings could include: Nutrition Education, Stress Management Strategies and Self-Esteem Building activities, this part of the program can enhance the educational experience by providing a strong foundation for our students and their families to grow on.
Student Activities will include but are not limited to:
• My Plate Education
• Portion Control Visual Learning
• Nutriplay Health in a Hurry- Grocery Shopping Hunt
• Role Play of Nutrition Education and Nutrition and Wellness based learning- Students read from a script to apply learning to real life scenarios.
 

Benefits to my students

Some benefits include students being able to concentrate better and focus on their academic tasks, attendance rates due to less frequent illness and promoting nationwide initiatives to educate children and families to make healthier choices throughout their lifetime.  

Budget Narrative

Item 1: My Plate Class pack is “a complete educational guide to the USDA MyPlate program, featuring the ultimate combination of visual aids and informative materials. MyPlate poster /banner pack and the Myplate teaching kit are included!

Item 2: Portion Size Visual Learning for Elementary pack provides visuals to understanding healthy portions and a balance of foods to promote a healthy lifestyle and learning to select other things in moderation at an early age. They also have an older grades version.

Item 3: The play food is to be used with the other materials to enhance the hands on learning aspect for the students and to allow role play and learning through application.

Item 4: Food Labels Teaching Kit helps to create Label Literacy while promoting practicing literacy skills and strategies in the classroom or at events.
These items partnered with their classroom education will assist educators is giving the students and families that we educate the power to make their own healthy choices for themselves.
